Snow-Camp is the UK’s only charity using a unique combination of skiing, snowboarding, education and vocational opportunities to support and empower inner-city young people

Snow-Camp
Date 2019
Region South East
Size 50-249 employees
Sector Charity
Working closely with those excluded from education, in care and in the youth justice system, Snow-Camp was established by a former youth worker who believed that snow sports could be successfully used as a catalyst to turn young people’s lives around.

Programmes are developed and delivered by young people and this peer-to-peer element is fundamental to the charity’s growth and success. The young people who become volunteers or apprentices for the charity act as its voice in their communities helping at-risk peers feel more positive about themselves and reducing negative behaviour.

Working alongside youth organisations, the programmes offered include a two-day induction, instructor qualifications and an apprenticeship with work placements provided through industry partners. To-date over 270 young people have become snowboard instructors and the charity has employed 31 apprentices. All training is at zero-cost to the participant and this is achieved through the charity securing highly reduced costs through partnerships and building a loyal supporter base. Admirably, 80% of funds raised are spent directly on the programme.

Snow-Camp is reaching its ambition of breaking down barriers associated with snow sports and achieving positive change with at-risk youths. Last year 820 young people were trained by 80 youth volunteers and 8 apprentices. 91% went on to gain instructor qualifications enabling them to move on to employment, training or further education.

With a vision to grow the programme in order to offer an apprenticeship course in every region, this small charity with big ambitions is empowering the youth of today. By creating and strengthening unexpected bonds and increasing life skills and opportunities Snow-Camp is also providing young people with a much-needed voice.

‘There is wide spread grief, sadness and most understandably anger amongst our youth in and around the borough. A chance to not only have the experience of Snow-Camp and all that is offers, but to progress to a higher level is something of great value to these young people at this time in their lives.’

‘My future only holds what I make it and I’m looking forward to continuing to share what I’ve learnt with the new young people. Snow-Camp has really changed my life and given me opportunities that I could only dream of and that’s the reason I come back year after
year. To offer more young people the same chances and support I received.’
