The City & Guilds Group recently invited Princess Royal Training Awards recipients past and present to attend a pop-up conference in East London.

Attendees gathered ahead of the awards ceremony to share best practice in being purpose-driven organisations.

It included a panel discussion with participants from UK companies known for their strong purposes:

  • Sue Gammons, Coaching Director, GSK
  • Matthew Pitt, Head of People Development, Veolia
  • Martin Jones, Chief Executive Officer, Home Instead Senior Care
  • Anna Markland, Ventures Manager UnLtd, and
  • Chris Jones, Chief Executive, City & Guilds Group

The panellists shared candid examples of successes and failures in leading with purpose.

Leadership secrets of progressive companies

Attendees also heard from Corporate Rebels on what purpose-driven, progressive companies do differently.

The company interviewed more than 150 admired companies like Google and Patagonia to learn their secrets.

Corporate Rebels co-founder Pim de Morree shared eight secrets to embed purpose at the core of an organisation.

He said the secrets might make leaders uncomfortable, but if a company wants greater staff retention and engagement, they need to make changes.

It’s especially crucial when 83% of the UK workforce is disengaged.
